As tick-borne disease patients, we appreciate everyone who supports us.

With our supporters-focused Meet-Ups, Blog, Love Languages Series, and tips on how to help loved ones with Lyme, we want to offer the same support back to them.

How To Support Loved Ones With Lyme

Basics:

  • Believe them even if you don’t understand

  • Learn about Lyme disease

  • Join a Meet-Up

  • Get tips on how to navigate complex situations relating to Lyme

  • Ask your loved one what kind of help they need and offer to assist

  • Check on them regularly

  • Do not minimize how they feel

  • Be patient; keep in mind that your loved one is going through a lot and that their emotions, symptoms, and reactions may fluctuate from day to day

  • Understand that while you may not be able to “fix” everything, your compassion, presence, and actions make a huge difference

  • Spend quality time with your loved one, even if the time spent looks different than it used to

  • Because accurate Lyme disease testing and many effective treatments are not covered by insurance, finances can become one of Lyme patients' most significant burdens. Combined with the mounting issues and earning losses that come with illness, disability, and lack of general public understanding, Lyme patients can end up struggling enormously. Some lose jobs, other sources of income, homes, and more.

Understanding this and finding ways to help can make an enormous difference in their lives.

    Ways to help:

    • Recognize the reality of your loved one’s situation and take action to help with necessary costs (medical, living, other forms of care, etc.)

    • Help with medical costs. You can do this in a variety of ways, including by helping your loved one fill out a grant application (find a list of financial assistance programs here).

    • Set up a fundraiser (such as GoFundMe) for your loved one.

    • If your loved one is able to work, help them find a job that accommodates their needs. Assist with a resume, recommendation, etc.

    • Provide transportation to doctor visits

    • Offer assistance with physically demanding tasks like cleaning, cooking, laundry, shopping, etc.

    • Provide judgment-free accommodations for your loved one’s needs (keep a conversation going and ask them what they may need)

    • Share words of affirmation—and be thoughtful about the words you use. Tap here for some tips

    • Consider helpful/meaningful gifts (these can cover physical and financial ways to help, too!)

    • Advocate for legislation, educational programs, and federal funding for better testing, treatments, and a cure

    • Share Lyme patient stories and help raise Lyme disease awareness. Many patients have become their own advocates in every capacity because there isn’t much outside help.
