Does someone you love have Lyme disease? In theory, showing compassion to a loved one is easy because you deeply care about that person and want them to overcome their illness. But in practice, showing compassion can sometimes be challenging, as it can require making adjustments in your own life.
One of the simplest ways to show compassion is to listen. You may not know what it feels like for your loved one to battle Lyme disease--and that is ok! But if you can genuinely listen to your loved one, giving them space to vent about their symptoms or ask for accommodations that may seem surprising or unfamiliar to you, that will demonstrate a kind of compassion that Lyme patients deeply need and appreciate.
Listening in a way that enables your loved one to feel heard can make a huge difference. Listen to your loved one with Lyme, and believe them. Follow-through and acting upon what they've told you in a way that helps your loved one becomes even easier after that.
