Find a Lyme-Literate Medical Doctor

“Lyme-literate” is a term commonly used to describe healthcare providers with knowledge and experience diagnosing and treating Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases. You may also see the term “Lyme-literate medical doctor,” or LLMD.

Finding the right provider is personal. You may want to consider their experience with Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases, availability, location or telehealth options, insurance participation, and cost.

It can also be helpful to find a provider who listens to your concerns, welcomes your questions, and communicates with you in a way that makes you feel comfortable.

Before scheduling, consider asking:

• Is the provider accepting new patients?

• Does the provider have experience with Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases?

• Do they offer telehealth?

• Do they accept your insurance?

• What are the costs for initial and follow-up appointments?

• How long is the wait for an appointment?

• What information or records should you provide before your visit?

These questions can help you understand your options before deciding whether to schedule an appointment.

Try searching more than one of the provider directories listed above, since each may include different healthcare professionals. You can also expand your geographic search or look for providers who offer telehealth where available.

If you find a provider who isn’t accessible to you, you can also ask their office whether they know of providers closer to your location.
