In June, the topic of pride gives supporters—and all of us at Generation Lyme—an opportunity to celebrate members of the LGBTQIA+ community. It is our responsibility to love and support members of the LGBTQIA+ community who live with Lyme disease.
When someone you love is living with Lyme disease, pride presents itself in unexpected ways. Supporters often feel pride for the love and care they are able to give to patients. Patients often feel pride for their personal strength and perseverance through a challenging illness.
Yet pride might also be associated with difficult emotions. At times, despite how hard they try, supporters may feel limited pride if they are unable to give patients the love and care they deserve, and patients may feel limited pride as they strive to feel better but face obstacles and setbacks along the way. As supporters, one thing you can do to help patients is simply to tell them you are proud of them.
We are asking for something special this Pride Month: for extra consideration of the LGBTQIA+ community, our LGBTQIA+ community members, what pride means, how our communities overlap and interact, and the amplification of LGBTQIA+ voices.
You do not have to change how you share your own stories; we simply ask you to join us in support. And however you think about pride, we hope you will talk about it with the Generation Lyme community this month.
