Supporters of tick-borne disease patients often want to appear strong, capable, and unwavering in their commitment to help. They may feel the urge to hide the stress and concern that come with supporting a loved one who is struggling. We often hear that supporters face this challenge. So if you have ever felt this way, we want to validate your experience.
Being vulnerable—acknowledging the physical, emotional, and mental challenges of being the loved one of a patient—can be productive and healing. For example, when you are tired and worn out yet tempted to say, ‘I’m fine,’ it is important to have a support system with whom you can share that you're feeling exhausted. Expressing this authentically may bring you a sense of relief.
It is tempting to believe that demonstrating vulnerability is a sign of weakness. We believe it is a sign of strength. Communicating your authentic feelings can help you and your loved one understand your limits and the most balanced way for you to be their caregiver. We know this isn’t easy and can be challenging to navigate.
To speak with other Lyme supporters about productive ways to demonstrate vulnerability—or just share your experiences in a safe space—join us for our monthly Meet-Ups for Parents, Partners, and Supporters.
