Gigi’s Story

Gigi, Writer

"I have been ill for almost three years, with wild, frightening, unpredictable symptoms, and more misdiagnoses than I can count. This March, an osteopath said, 'Let’s test you for Lyme again. I think they missed it the first time.' He was right, and I was devastated.

But since then, I have discovered hope for a future beyond Lyme—by accepting where I am now.

Life is not about what we planned for; it’s about how we respond to the circumstances we’re given. We can accept our present while envisioning a future full of possibilities. Before Lyme, I was a writer and university creative writing instructor. Today, I pour myself into other creative modes, focusing on what I can do rather than what I can’t.

Lyme is often viciously lonely; most people in our lives don’t understand how sick we are. I used to mourn the friendships and everyday joys I’d lost, but now I find gifts even on the darkest days. I’ve met amazing people on my Lyme journey, and I’m creating a new life with my husband and the people who love me and stand with me through the uncertainty. Our relationships have grown deeper, and I am most grateful for that.”
